چکیده

This study has conducted a comprehensive model evaluation to help identify major uncertainties of regional air quality model in predicting long-range transport and deposition of acidifying substances in East Asia. Annual predictions of the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model are carried out at two horizontal scales: an 81 km domain over East Asia and a 27 km domain over Northeast Asia. The model successfully reproduces the magnitudes and diurnal variations of SO2 mixing ratios at most sites of the Acid Deposition Monitoring Network in East Asia (EANET). Through the comparison with tropospheric NO2 columns from the Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment (GOME), the model is shown to be able to capture major spatial and seasonal variations of NO2 observed from space over East Asia. Regarding the magnitudes, however, CMAQ underpredicts the GOME retrieval over industrial area of eastern China in March and December, and over the remote western China in July. Primary reasons for the discrepancy over eastern China are the uncertainties both in emission inventory and in the GOME retrieval in wintertime. For the wet season the soil-biogenic NO emission estimates need to be reviewed regarding the intensity and timing of fertilizer applications, and the magnitude of rain-induced pulsing. The sensitivities of predicted NO2 columns, NOx mixing ratios, and wet nitrate deposition to 50% increase of NOx emissions are studied. Due to the underpredictions of NOx and also to the uncertainty in modeled precipitation and nitrate formation, CMAQ has a tendency to underpredict annual wet deposition loads of nitrate observed by the EANET network. r 2008 Elsevier Ltd. Long-range transport of acidifying substances in East Asia—Part II Source– receptor relationships

Region-to-grid source–receptor (S/R) relationships are established for sulfur and reactive nitrogen deposition in East Asia, using the Eulerian-type Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model with emission and meteorology data for 2001. We proposed a source region attribution methodology by analyzing the non-linear responses of the CMAQ model to emission changes. Sensitivity simulations were...

A Probabilistic Precipitation Model for the Prediction of Long Range Transport of Acidic Species in East Asia

Acid deposition is one of the most important environmental issues in East Asia including Japan. The long range transport of acidic species from Asian continent to Japan islands cause large amount of acid deposition especially in winter. These phenomena are strongly affected by the precipitation on the sea, however, it is not easy to get enough information on it. This study aims to develop a sim...

Long-range transport of sulfur dioxide in the central Pacific

[1] Long-range transport of sulfur dioxide (SO2) from east Asia to the central North Pacific troposphere was observed on transit flights during the NASA Transport and Chemical Evolution over the Pacific mission. A series of SO2-enhanced layers above the boundary layer was observed during these flights. The significant features included enhanced SO2 layers associated with low water vapor and low...

An evaluation of ozone dry deposition simulations in East Asia

We use a 3-D regional atmospheric chemistry transport model (WRF-Chem) to examine ozone dry deposition in East Asia, which is an important but uncertain research area because of insufficient observation and numerical studies focusing on East Asia. Here we compare two widely used dry deposition parameterization schemes, the Wesely and M3DRY schemes, which are used in the WRF-Chem and Community M...

An overview of emissions of SO2 and NOx and the long-range transport of oxidized sulfur and nitrogen pollutants in East Asia.

The long-range transport of oxidized sulfur (sulfur dioxide (SO2) and sulfate) and oxidized nitrogen (nitrogen oxides (NOx) and nitrate) in East Asia is an area of increasing scientific interest and political concern. This paper reviews various published papers, including ground- and satellite-based observations and numerical simulations. The aim is to assess the status of the anthropogenic emi...
